Black Square – CBC’s Two part “Ideas” Programme * April 20, 2006
Four Villages Inn has received the two CD set of David Redel's critical look at GHANA @ 50. The second CD entitled "Kejetia Roundabout” contains quotes from your hosts here at Four Villages, Charity and Chris. Four Villages Inn was David's base in Kumasi.
Here's what he wrote when sending the CD's, "Thanks for all your hospitality and insight. I hope you enjoy the programs." We too hope you enjoy the programmes.
Four villages Inn Rate Increase * April 12, 2007
It had to come ....since April of 2005 we have proudly held our rates firm; however, with the present national program of load-shedding a.k.a. Single:    US$65 plus 15% VAT or cedi equivalent
Double:  US$75 plus 15% VAT or cedi equivalent
Triple:    US$85 plus 15% VAT or cedi equivalent
"GHANA: A Portrait" by Max Milligan * April 2, 2007
What a wonderful book of photographs and all of them of GHANA too! And we've got a copy of this spectacular coffee table style book for you to enjoy while relaxing on our grand veranda overlooking FOUR VILLAGES INN's lush garden or sitting in the tasteful comfort of our spacious living room. "Ghana: A Portrait" provides an inspiring insight into the first country in Africa south of the Sahara to gain independence from colonial rule. Divorcing itself from the trend to portray Africa in all too familiar images of pity and difficulty, this portrait celebrates the beauty of a nation celebrating it's 50th anniversary by focusing on the depth of what it has, what it has built and what its people are.
Visit a Fetish Priest in Ghana! * March 27 18, 2007
No, a visit to a "divine priest". That's how Nana Yaw Atefah defines himself and for many that is the power he has in their lives and perhaps yours...
The Bradt Guide to GHANA (page 317) makes mention of a priest At Edwenani who claims to be almost 100 and another dreadlocked priest at Aduke Jachie. However since 2006, travellers have been disappointed, meeting neither after making the long treks.
Now, FOUR VILLAGES INN has discovered another traditional African spiritualist located close by to the Inn at the brass village of Kokofrom where we already take visitors. With Comfort of Central Market and Kente Village tour fame or on your own, you can take in both experiences at the same time. For the priest, you'll have to take along the traditional bottle of Schnapps (available at Four Villages Inn), an egg that we'll provide for you, and a sum of money depending on the depth you enter the realm of Nana Atefah. Spirits are called up and hunters are sent out to conquer the evil that disturbs lives.
Veterinary Tourism or Tourism for Your Profession * March 18, 2007
You may have heard of dark tourism (slave castles and forts), sports tourism and funeral tourism, all big here in Ghana...well now FOUR VILLAGES INN has come up with a new type of tourism-veterinary tourism!
In January 2007, veterinarian Dr. Ruth Blauwiekel of the University of Vermont, e-mailed the Scotts saying she would like to visit some facilities concerned with animals. So...the Scotts got right on it first arranging a tour of the Kumasi Abattoir (slaughterhouse) - a modern facility which incidentally was built with Canadian C.I.D.A. money and expertise, with Mr. George Acquah, production manager, himself a vet, and second a trip to a large poultry farm owned by one Mr. Darko, one of the biggest business operators here in Ashanti.
As it happened, Mr. Darko and Dr. Ruth later met at Four Villages Inn and talked about bird flu and other issues affecting poultry production.
Are you interested in how your profession is practised here in Ghana? Just mention it to us and we'll see what we can arrange. FOUR VILLAGES INN is "much more than just a place to stay".
Canadian Filmmaker Visits Four Villages Inn * March 15, 2007
Canadian documentary filmmaker Anthony Berube recently visited Kumasi to film various attractions in the city and obtain interviews for his documentary project “Through African Eyes”. Disturbed by the abundance of negative news in the media and news programmes, Tony has visited several countries in West Africa to hear what Africans have to say – rather than the “negative spin” that always seems to be added to news items coming from the continent.
“Africa has many positive stories to tell,” said Mr. Berube, “ …and I believe audiences will be interested in hearing what Africans themselves have to say about their future … their hopes, aspirations, ambitions and dreams.”
Tony interviewed Charity at Four Villages Inn as an example of an African who has lived abroad and then returned to start her own business and reinvest her knowledge in young people and their future. Following the interview, Mr. Berube also visited the Scott Trade Institute to see firsthand how just one small school is making a difference in the lives and opportunities for young girls.
Four Villages Inn Hosts Rough Guide Travel Writer * February 25, 2007
In February, FOUR VILLAGES INN had the pleasure of hosting Mr. Jules Brown, currently at work on the Rough Guide to Portugal, and his parents Ken and Jean. Funnily enough, Jules was born here in Ghana and he and his parents visited Takoradi where he was born 43 years ago and Kumasi.
In Jules remarked that the section on Kumasi in the present Rough Guide published years ago was rather "skimpy" in that Four Villages Inn was not mentioned and he assured Charity and Chris that he would write to the person updating the old edition who he knows to supply more info on Kumasi and, of course, to give a glowing recommendation for FVI.
Here's what he wrote in our guest book: "Great place and wonderful food prepared by Charity! Highly recommended. Loved the market tour given by Comfort.”
Governor General of Canada Visits Ghana - Update * February 13, 2007
Well, as it turned our Her Excellency Michaelle Jean did not get to Kumasi and stay at Four Villages Inn due to time constraints. But that did not stop your hosts from extending a more personal invitation to Canada's Head of State.
Chris and Charity met Her Excellency at a garden reception on the grounds of the Canadian High Commission in Accra. And, on the following night, the Scotts had the honour of being among the few Canadians in the country invited to a state dinner hosted by His Excellency President of Ghana J.A. Kufour.
Senior Producer from CBC Visits Four Villages  * February 3, 2007
In January, 2007, David Redel from the Canadian Broadcasting Corp and his wife Karen Murray stayed six nights at FVI while David was researching a three part C.B.C. radio Ideas series on GHANA @ 50. David himself had served two years as a Canadian University Service Overseas volunteer in Kumasi between 1977 and 1979, so this project is near and dear to his heart.
While in Kumasi, FVI played the role of fixer arranging interviews with people from the vast number of contacts Chris and Charity have made during the past eight years living in Kumasi and running Four Villages Inn.
Here's what David and Karen wrote in our guest book on leaving:
"Your hospitality and help have made my return to Kumasi a joy. I hope my radio programs can do justice to your many insights into this fascinating country." D.R.
Thank you so much. I want to return." K.M.
CBC Series on Ghana @ 50
Tune into the C.B.C. Ideas program on March 6 to hear the first part of David Redel's three part series on Ghana @ 50. Parts 2 and 3 air on March 13 and 20th respectively. Who knows Charity and Chris might just have something to say....
US Marines Invade Four Villages Inn * January 10, 2007
Well, not quite.... Four Villages Inn has had the pleasure of hosting two groups of US marines in the country instructing Ghana Armed Forces personnel on peace keeping strategies. Perhaps you can guess by the looks of contentment on their faces that the marines were well accommodated and fed at FOUR VILLAGES INN. Below are the comments they wrote in our guestbook:
"Fantastic home away from home. Wonderful"
"Beautiful house and outstanding service."
"Wonderful home and good people. An outstanding experience. Fantastic food and service as well."
"Very friendly, courteous, and pleasant hosts. I will highly recommend the Four Villages Inn to anyone going to Ghana."
"Beautiful home! Wonderful stay!"
"What a great place! I completely enjoyed everything. Thanks for everything"
Incidentally, while Charity and Chris did not win any silver stars, they were presented with a Marine Corps pin and badge!
